Facilities and Resources

The Exploration Geophysics Laboratory (Room 113, Steele Building) provides the physical hub of the exploration geophysics program, housing honours and postgraduate students, and in-house computing facilities. Advanced level courses are given in this laboratory, whilst lower level classes are given in larger departmental and central venues.

Staff
The program is currently handled by two industry-based academics, with input from other industry specialists:

Dr. Steve Hearn handles introductory geophysics courses, and advanced courses in seismic exploration and signal processing. He works part-time at UQ and is Chief Geophysicist at Velseis Pty Ltd

Dr. Peter Furness teaches advanced-level courses in potential-field, electrical and EM geophysics. Peter is a consultant with extensive experience covering theoretical, practical and computational geophysics.

Equipment
The laboratory has basic field equipment for magnetics, gravity, resistivity, radiometrics, seismic refraction. Other field equipment (for land and marine seismic reflection, electromagnetics, and borehole logging) is periodically borrowed from outside organisations.

The Exploration Geophysics Laboratory maintains a data processing facility which has provided the basis for a number of research projects, particularly in geophysical data processing. The processing system is based on public domain packages such as Seismic Unix running on PC-UNIX systems.

Industry Links
A wide range of geophysical sub-branches are covered in the Exploration Geophysics Program. Links with professional organisations, other universities, and industry are essential for both teaching and research. Most honours and higher-degree students work on industry-related projects, and often work part-time in industry. Organisations who have recently provided logistical support and input include:

ASEG | Velseis | Fullagar Geophysics | Geophysical Resources and Surveys | Vale Australia | CSIRO | Origin Energy | BHP | Geological Survey of Queensland | Geoscience Australia | XStrata | Santos | Geoimage | APPEA
